Boris is Back
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, returns to the columnist pages of the Daily Telegraph for the first time since victory over his two term predecessor Ken Livingstone. In his usual refreshingly honest and witty style he refers to the sometimes hopelessly muddled state of public opinon, when they express profuse devotion to one issue yet when offered with the choice often react in the most peculiar manner. Politics as often said is a very fickle profession and political scientists seem to spend a lifetime attempting to detect a cohernt pattern amongst the voters. For instance I found it of interest to come across a story in last weekend’s Sunday Times where a group of US historians whose statistical model (which I believe was accurate at six previous presidential elections) found Barack Obama as a certainty for the White House with John McCain’s chances ranking with that of Jimmy Carter in 1980 or George McGovern in 1972 (both disastrous campaigns.) Yet I would remain extremely sceptical of such analysis, my money shall still rest on McCain as the candidate who over the next five months to polling day shall emerge as the most trusted figure.
At any rate I feel Boris has certainly been vindicated as a capable leader over the last number of weeks, through his focus upon clamping down upon minor crimes (such as drinking of alcohol on the Tube) his strategy shall ultimately greatly assist in tackling London’s major crimes. He has quickly dismantled some of the more ridiculous policies implemented under Livingstone such as the provision of fuel for buses by the Chavez government in Venezuela which was little more than a political stunt and was not afraid to stretch across the party divide and appoint quality members of Labour to positions where thought fit. The man simply brings a brighter side to the world of politics.
